FAQ’s

Upgrading from the BMW factory speakers to our Alpha One kit will make a huge difference to the quality of the sound in your vehicle. We use premium materials and a carefully honed design for improved clarity and performance, giving a more refined, enjoyable sound. With around 30% greater power handling than the standard OEM speakers, Alpha Ones are also capable of greater volume in appropriate setups.

Owners of vehicles with a basic factory stereo — without tweeters or a separate amplifier — will notice an even greater improvement when adding both components to their system with our Alpha One kit and Premium Audio System.

The Alpha One speakers are a marked step up from any other plug-and-play speaker kit on the market; both our speakers and amplifier are meticulously designed from the ground up for optimal performance in your BMW, for a truly remarkable sound out of the box. But a lot goes into building a great sound system, and standout speakers like the Alpha Ones are just part of the puzzle. Other companies can offer speakers, but only BimmerTech has the combined decades of experience working with BMW electronics and audio expertise to create equipment that perfectly matches your vehicle’s factory stereo.

  1. Premium Sound Premium Sound (also knownto BMW internally as “Top HiFi”) is branded as: — Logic 7 — harman/kardon — Individual Audio — Enhanced Premium. All these systems share a similar architecture – speaker size, count, location, and amplifier channel complement are all identical.

When buying a Premium Audio System alongside your Alpha One speakers, we are also able to tune the amplifier to match not only your vehicle, but also the speakers you have fitted (Alpha One or OEM). This results in a far better sound than you’d get from a one-size-fits-all solution from another brand.

Yes. We designed the Alpha One speakers to perform in BMWs with a range of stereo systems, including the most basic options without a separate amplifier. The Alpha Ones will still be a noticeable improvement over the factory speakers. To make the most of your new speakers, however, you may want to add our Premium Audio System amplifier.

Yes. Adding Alpha One tweeters to a vehicle that did not come with tweeters from the factory will require replacing a trim piece in the front doors, in which the tweeters will be mounted. After selecting your model, you'll see the list of parts you will need to purchase to install your kit. Contact us for more information.

Almost no mainstream aftermarket speakers have the power handling to take full advantage of the extra wattage provided by a more powerful amplifier. Even our Premium Audio System is tuned at less than its full power output to prevent overloading the speakers. More powerful amplifiers are useful only in custom speaker installations usually requiring dedicated speaker enclosures.

The true benefit of our Premium Audio System isn’t just the increased power, but the improvement it can make to the quality of the sound, thanks to the 64-bit DSP and high signal-to-noise ratio. Our expert audiophiles use this capability to tune your amplifier to suit your specific vehicle and speakers, meaning you’ll get a more pleasant sound than you would from an amplifier that hasn’t been professionally adapted to your vehicle, whatever its specs on paper.

Our amplifier is designed to perform best with the BMW OEM HiFi speakers or our Alpha One kit. With either of these sets, we will tune the amp to bring out the best in your speakers. If you upgrade to the Alpha Ones at a later date, we will provide a tuning file to adjust the amplifier’s tuning for your new speakers.

The Premium Audio System can also be used with other aftermarket speakers, but we are not able to provide dedicated tuning files. /unlock-code-generator-software.html. For optimal performance, we recommend using 2Ω subwoofers.

We have chosen not to publish frequency response graphs for our speakers because we don't believe this information is useful in a car audio scenario. The interior of your vehicle — including its size, shape and materials — is going to have a significant impact on the sound you actually hear, and this won’t be shown on a frequency response graph.

We took frequency measurements during the development process, but the sound that really matters is the sound in situ in the car, where we did the bulk of the tuning work when developing our Alpha One kit.

We have published specifications for our speakers on our website in the 'Specification' section to make it easy to understand what each speaker offers.

In terms of other aspects of the speakers' design, we have purposefully chosen specifications that are well suited to use with either a factory BMW amp or our own Premium Audio System. This balance of capabilities is what gives our speakers such an impressive all-round performance.

We do not offer a money-back free trial. If you don't have the opportunity to hear the Alpha One speakers for yourself before buying, you can check out what our happy customers have to say about their phenomenal sound:

February 02, 2016 in album art by Dan Gravell

My previous post about getting album art to display on Audi's MMI in-car entertainment system has been really quite successful. Since posting, and as of today, almost 3,000 people have visited that blog post. So I figured: if I can help that many Audi drivers, maybe users of other in-car entertainment systems could also be helped with the same problems?

It's worth recapping why this is important. Album art makes your music collection easier to browse and choose-music-from. That means less time looking at your in-car display, and more time with your eyes on the road!

So, next in the queue: BMW iDrive. iDrive is a system for controlling all sorts of elements in a BMW: the climate, navigation systems, hands-free telephone, video and, of course, audio. With respect to audio, you can either provide your own music collection, or the more recent versions also have support for streaming services such as Spotify.

iDrive artwork requirements

When considering your own music collection, there are three main ways you can store the library and provide it to iDrive: from a USB key, from an iPod, and from the system's own internal storage. The last option, strangely, does not support album art, so the following guidance will only help if you are plugging in a USB key or an iPod.

The requirements for iDrive album covers boil down to:

bliss ruleset

So what does that mean for configuring bliss? It's pretty simple:

  • Always embed artwork
  • Save a 'Folder' cover art file
  • Maximum size: 500x500

You may also want to set a minimum size of 300x300 for the first scan of bliss, but in some cases there are some rarer albums with lower resolution artwork which you might not be able to find artwork for. If this is the case, try running again without the minimum size.

On to the tutorial!

Walkthrough

First, download and install bliss:

Start 'er up, and visit the Albums page. Remember: bliss runs in the background, and is displayed in your Web browser, so if you don't see anything immediately, try going to http://localhost:3220. If this is the first time you have run bliss, you'll be given the option to show the settings screen automatically, but if you aren't, click the settings cog at the top-right of the page:

Choose the location of your music library. If you have your car's USB key already plugged in you should be able to browse to this. On Windows it will be 'mapped' as a drive, e.g. Y:. On OS X you should be able to find the USB key under /Volumes/.

Click the ON/OFF button under Cover art to show the artwork rule settings. Now it's time to enter our iDrive rules as above. Once that's done the settings should look like this:

Now click Apply rules and bliss will begin scanning, assessing and fixing your albums.

When the scan is ongoing, bliss shows the albums currently pending, undergoing and completed assessment. bliss is rule based. This means that the cover art settings you configured above are taken to be a 'rule' that each album is assessed against. For example, each album will be assessed that it has embedded art no larger than 500x500.

If an album is not compliant with those rules, bliss tries to fix it automatically. Actually, that's not completely true; with the settings configured as illustrated above, bliss will only embed missing artwork automatically. It can also shrink artwork to under 500x500 if you tick the Shrink art automatically box. Otherwise, if it finds extant artwork over 500x500 it will offer a one-click fix for each album that breaks that rule.

Once assessment and any automated fixes are complete, bliss shows its final assessment of each album:

You can show any remaining albums that are missing artwork using the Compliance is: filter. Choose Missing art:

You can then easily choose alternative art manually using the cover art alternatives view.

At this point, bliss has embedded artwork into your music files. This means its time to copy them to your USB drive (if they aren't there already) and pop them into your BMW to see if it worked!

Any more rules?

I'm not a BMW owner so I cannot verify these rules. If anyone has any refinements to make to the ruleset, or more suggestions, let me know! Failing that, if BMW want to send me a car to test on..

One complexity that's worth noting is that the iDrive system also bundles a Gracenote database, which it can interrogate for album art, although it's not clear if this database or Folder.jpg are preferred as the first fallback after no embedded artwork is detected. In summary, as with the requirements above, use embedded art.
